What’s your advice for keeping newer locs moisturized?

Water! Water, water, water. 🙂

Water is the only thing that moisturizer hair. Everything else can help attract water or seal it into your hair. But the common factor is water.

Here are some easy things you can do:

Spritz your locs with water in the morning. Sleep with a silk or satin headscarf or pillow over your head. Shower without a shower cap to allow the steam to penetrate your hair. Avoid shampooing your hair too frequently. Also don’t forget to lightly use conditioner on your hair, too.

More “advanced” techniques involve nonpolar substances to seal in moisture (e.g., oils) and emollients to attract moisture (e.g., glycerin). We touch on these topics and explain other methods of keeping hair moisturized in our “moisture” tag:
